The Oakengates Picture House is now open. It’s a 32 seat independent cinema located above The Old Fighting Cocks in Oakengates. We’ve got genuine tiered cinema seating and a massive 5 metre screen with full HD digital projection and Dolby Surround Sound.
Why a cinema above a pub? We were at a loss as to what to do with the disused function room on the middle floor. We just left it unfinished when we did the original pub refurb last year. In August we conducted a feasibility study to explore the various options and possible uses. We toyed with creating 4 B&B rooms, creating a skittle alley, a restaurant, a function room, a tanning salon or even a gym. It was then decided that the best option was to create a small independent cinema. This would complement our “bring your own food” idea and provide the residents of Telford with something a little different. The idea was obviously a good one because no sooner had we applied for the various permits and bought the old cinema seats from eBay than a “film club” sprang up in another pub showing videos on the pub telly. It’s an interesting idea but a telly in a pub does not a cinema make! Undeterred we soldiered on and the Oakengates Picture House opened its doors to great accolade on January the 15th.
